BMW 4 Coupe’ Launch Video

Client: BMW Cambodia
Agency: Killat
Role: Director & Producer
Year: 2021

Project Brief

Killat, a creative agency based in Phnom Penh, invited me to direct and produce a promotional video and TV commercial for the launch of the BMW 4 Coupe'. The campaign needed to convey the vehicle’s high-end performance and aesthetic — all within a controlled studio setting. The concept was minimal: two actors presenting key features of the car indoors. However, creating a polished, premium look in such a reflective environment came with significant technical challenges. Studio rig featuring overhead lights, diffused camera wall, and triple-cam setup to avoid unwanted reflections.

Technical Challenges

One of the most significant challenges during this project was the sheer size and scale of the production. Shooting a full-sized vehicle indoors presented major logistical and technical hurdles. We had to install massive softbox diffusers, stretching all the way up to the studio ceiling, in order to create soft, even lighting and control harsh reflections on the car's glossy metallic surface. We had to minimize reflections from lights and gear, keep crew invisible during moving shots, and achieve balanced lighting without overexposing the car's contours.

Our solutions

Polarizer Filters: Used circular polarizers on the lenses to cut through glare and suppress surface reflections. Blackout Drapes: Created a 'black void' using large black fabric panels to hide crew, gear, and reflections in the car's paint. Controlled Overhead Lighting: Designed a soft, even lighting rig to highlight the vehicle’s curves without introducing hotspots. Planning the dolly-in gimbal shot toward the front grille of the BMW X4.

Outcome & Impact

The video was delivered on time and exceeded client expectations. BMW Cambodia was thrilled with the results, noting the polished visual style and technical quality. This project opened doors to new work with Jaguar Cambodia and established my reputation for handling technically challenging studio shoots.
